Dropping/Withdrawing from a Course
DROPPING A COURSE BEFORE IT HAS BEGUN (BOTH ONLINE AND FACE-TO-FACE COURSES)
Students may drop a course without financial penalty up to the first day of class using the SIS Self-Service website, or by submitting the Add/Drop Form in person, by fax at 410-516-9817, or by mail to the Office of the Registrar, Johns Hopkins University, School of Education, 6740 Alexander Bell Drive, Suite 180, Columbia, MD 21046-2100.
Students who wish to withdraw a course after a course has begun should follow the procedures outlined under the Withdrawing from a Course policy below.
WITHDRAWING FROM A COURSE AFTER IT HAS BEGUN (BOTH ONLINE AND FACE-TO-FACE COURSES)
Once classes begin, students may withdraw from a course but will be charged a pro-rated amount of tuition depending what percentage of the semester was completed before the Registrar’s Office received the Add/Drop Form. Tuition refunds are calculated from the date the Office of the Registrar receives the Add/Drop Form (see Refund Schedule). In normal circumstances, if a student withdraws from courses after the refund schedule deadline, s/he will not be eligible for any tuition refund. However, in exceptional circumstances, students who withdraw from courses after the refund schedule deadline may petition (using the General Petition Form) for a partial tuition reimbursement. The specific notation (e.g. a Withdrawal notation) that appears on the transcript for a course that a student has withdrawn from depends on how far into the semester a course has progressed before the Registrar’s Office receives the Add/Drop Form.
Students may not withdraw from courses online using the SIS Self-Service website. Notice to the instructor of intent to withdraw is not sufficient, nor are telephone withdrawals accepted. To withdraw from a course, students must submit the Add/Drop Form in person, by fax to 410-516-9817, by email to firstname.lastname@example.org, or by mail to the Office of the Registrar, Johns Hopkins University, School of Education, 6740 Alexander Bell Drive, Suite 180, Columbia, MD 21046-2100. The Withdrawal/Audit Calendar lists the last date each semester to withdraw without academic penalty (without receiving the grade of F). Students should contact the Office of the Registrar to confirm the last date to withdraw without academic penalty or to change to auditor status for other alternate format courses.

Note: The registration fee for a student who drops a course (before classes have begun) or withdraws from a course (after classes have begun) is nonrefundable.
Note: Financial aid recipients will have their aid award adjusted according to credits registered. Students dropping to less than half-time status will have their federal aid canceled and will be responsible for any debit balance created.
Note: International students on an F-1 visa are advised to contact the International Services Office at 410-516-1013 before dropping/withdrawing from a course.
