Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Innovation and Inclusion in the STEM Ecosystem Ebony McGee has been selected as a 2025 Fellow of the American Educational Research Association.

The honor reflects her significant contributions to the field of education research and her dedication to fostering equity and inclusion within STEM disciplines.

After earning a master of science in industrial engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and an early career as an engineering analyst, McGee she earned her PhD in curriculum and instruction, focusing on mathematics education, from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Since then, through research examining the STEM education and career experiences of Black and other minoritized individuals, she has become a leading expert on race and structural racism within the STEM ecosystem.

“Ebony brings the highest standards of evidence and an unmatched passion to her work supporting resilience and wellness for STEM students of color,” said Johns Hopkins School of Education Dean Christopher Morphew. “I’m delighted that she has earned this clear recognition of the impact of her stellar work.”

McGee has been recognized with 13 National Science Foundation (NSF) investigator awards and has founded the initiative Racial Revolutionary and Inclusive Guidance for Health Throughout STEM (R-RIGHTS) and co-founded the Explorations in Diversifying Engineering Faculty Initiative and the Institute in Critical Quantitative, Computational, and Mixed Methodologies. She is also author of the book Black, Brown, Bruised: How Racialized STEM Education Stifles Innovation, published by Harvard Education Press.

“The 2025 AERA Fellows join a brilliant group of scholars, and they are most deserving of this honor,” said AERA Executive Director Felice J. Levine. “Their significant contributions to the education research field demonstrate the highest standards of academic excellence and scholarship.”

McGee’s forthcoming induction as AERA Fellow will take place during the association’s Annual Meeting in Denver on April 24, 2025.
