More than 50 Johns Hopkins School of Education faculty, staff, and students are showcasing their research at the 2024 American Educational Research Association (AERA) Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.  Attendees of the April 11–14 conference include one Doctor of Education (EdD) presenter, 14 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) presenters, three alumni, one master’s degree in counseling presenter, 27 faculty members, and four staff. Together, they will contribute to a total of 56 presentations, posters, or roundtable discussions.

The world’s largest gathering of education researchers, AERA’s annual meeting spotlights groundbreaking and innovative education studies. With over 2,500 sessions available, the meeting promises a dynamic experience, offering opportunities to glean insights from prominent scholars, explore the latest research, and cultivate professional connections.

The meeting’s theme, “Dismantling Racial Injustice and Constructing Educational Possibilities: A Call to Action,” asks researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to imagine bold possibilities for education spaces free of racial injustice.

“As educational leaders, our duty lies not only in the dissemination of knowledge but in the tireless pursuit of equity in educational opportunity,” says Dean Christopher Morphew. “This conference serves as a beacon of hope, where ideas are exchanged, challenges are confronted, and solutions are forged.”
The first day of the conference features highlighted talks from esteemed Johns Hopkins speakers such as Professor Ebony McGee and doctoral students Zariah Nicole and Devin White, who will share insights on fostering entrepreneurship in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics among Black women.

Over the next two days, Johns Hopkins researchers will delve into critical topics such as college persistence, teacher collaboration, and racial disparities in education. Scholars such as Yolanda Abel and Richard Lofton will lead the charge in addressing these pressing issues.

The fourth and final day of the conference will continue to highlight Johns Hopkins research with sessions on leadership development, the dynamics of racism, and the impact of community schools. Esteemed professors such as Toni Ungaretti and Bloomberg Distinguished Professor Odis Johnson Jr. will cover important topics such as advancing social equity through leadership and exploring complex dynamic systems that serve as windows into interrogating racism.
