Alejandro Diasgranados, MS ’18 and 2015 TFA corps member, has been featured numerous times in recent months for his work as a second- and third-grade teacher at Aiton Elementary School in Northeast Washington, D.C.
In October, he won a $10,000 grant from the Washington Redskins to create a laundry center for the school, where over 90 percent of students come from low-income households—many without access to washers and dryers.
A feature in November’s Washingtonian magazine followed Diasgranados and colleague Quay Dorsey, also a TFA alumnus, as young men serving as senior teachers at Aiton Elementary. The article praised both for creating two of the school’s highest-achieving classrooms despite significant challenges.
And in December, after Diasgranados’ students wrote fan letters to NHL Washington Capitals star Devante Smith-Pelly, the Stanley Cup Champion surprised them with a visit to their class.
