On April 19, Johns Hopkins University’s Lambda Chapter of the Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Counseling Academic & Professional Honor Society International inducted 92 counseling students into the prestigious organization. Dean Christopher Morphew, along with chapter faculty advisor Ileana Gonzalez, spoke of the need for counselors in our society in both clinical and school settings.
The keynote address was given by Rufus “Tony” Spann, Ph.D, an alumnus of the counseling program and CEO of You in Mind Psychotherapy and Consultation. In his speech, Spann likened the lifelong role of those in the counseling profession as “a march for many lives.” Drawing upon the inspiring potential of today’s social justice movements around the word, he exhorted his emerging colleagues, gathered in the Homewood campus’ Hodson Hall, to firmly step into this fraternity. “Every step we take is a march towards scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership, advocacy, and excellence in counseling,” he said, echoing the mission of CSI itself.
In fulfillment of that mission, the Lambda Chapter of CSI holds a number of events throughout the year to promote and enhance the counseling profession. One of the goals of newly elected president, Lynne Battaglia, is to begin a mentorship program, in which new inductees will partner with an incoming counseling student.
