The School of Education is honored to welcome William P. McManus, chief of police of San Antonio, Texas, as the graduation speaker for our Destination Graduation Ceremony in Las Vegas, NV, on June 9.
Chief McManus became the Chief of Police of the San Antonio Police Department in April 2006. Previously, he served as Chief of the Minneapolis Police Department from February 2004 through April 2006, and Chief of the Dayton, Ohio, Police Department from November 2001 through February 2004.
Chief McManus started his law enforcement career in 1975, when he joined the Washington D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. There, he rose through the ranks to become assistant chief of the Metropolitan PD, a position he held until 2001, when he became chief of the Dayton PD.
As chief of the San Antonio PD, he has overseen the creation of the city’s successful Violent Crime Task Force (VCTF) as well as the SAFFE Program, a partnership with neighborhoods across San Antonio. Under his leadership, San Antonio has become one of the safest large cities in the nation—citywide, 89% of registered neighborhoods have seen a decrease in violent crime and 73% of registered neighborhoods have seen a decrease in property crime compared to 2017.
Chief McManus is a graduate of the FBI National Executive Institute and National Academy, and the Senior Management Institute for Police at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Villanova University in Pennsylvania and a master’s degree in management from Johns Hopkins University.
