As the Johns Hopkins School of Education begins the 2022-23 academic year, Dean Christopher Morphew has announced several changes in roles among faculty and leadership, effective July 1, 2022.
Professor Hunter Gehlbach has completed his term as vice dean of academic affairs and now returns to a faculty role in research and leadership in open scholarship. He continues as faculty lead for the school’s PhD program.
As the search is underway for the new vice dean, Professor Norma Day-Vines, associate dean for diversity and faculty development, has taken over as interim vice dean.
To carry on the vital work Dr. Day-Vines has launched in diversity, equity, and inclusion, Yolanda Abel, former chair of the Advanced Studies in Education Department, has taken on a half-time leadership role in the Office of Diversity and Faculty Development. Associate Professor Christy Harnett continues to support the office’s important DEI efforts, as well.
Jonathan Plucker, Julian C. Stanley Professor of Talent Development, has assumed the new faculty leadership role of associate dean of faculty affairs. Plucker will lead the annual faculty evaluation process; oversee and execute the tenure process; and serve as faculty liaison on issues relating to the Education Building renovation, working closely with Assistant Dean Raina Gandhi.
Laura Quaynor has officially taken over as chair of the Advanced Studies in Education Department, and Laura Flores Shaw began her term as interim director of the EdD program. Mary Ellen Beaty-O’Ferrall continues as chair of the Innovative Teaching and Leadership Department, and Christy Harnett remains as chair of the Counseling and Educational Studies Department.
On the dean’s leadership team, Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Operations Fernanda Pio Roda will serve in a half-time capacity as interim senior associate dean for finance and administration for the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). She joined the SAIS leadership team on July 1, splitting her time with SOE for an anticipated six-month term while SAIS searches for a permanent position.
