Alan J. Reid is an assistant research scientist at the Center for Research and Reform in Education at Johns Hopkins University. He specializes in mixed-methods evaluation research in the fields of instructional design, STEM, and educational technology. He has published numerous reports, journal articles, and book chapters on the intersectionality between technology, human behavior, and learning in academic environments, and he has presented his research at local and national conferences. He holds a Ph.D. in Instructional Design and Technology from Old Dominion University.

His scholarly research has spanned a wide array of topics, from the ethical implications of design in everyday technologies to the psychological effects of smartphone usage in contemporary society. His contributions include several books that apply a post-phenomenological approach to the philosophy of technology: The Smartphone Paradox: Our Ruinous Dependency in the Device Age (2018), A Philosophy of Gun Use (2022), and Everything is Design: The Hidden Ethics of Our Objects and Public Spaces (2025).
