The Recruit, Educate, Support, Evaluate, and Train (RESET) Initiative prepares students in the School Counseling concentration of the MS in Counseling program to address mental health issues in high-need urban, rural, and suburban school districts.
Designated for students enrolled in the School Counseling concentration of the MS in Counseling program, the Recruit, Educate, Support, Evaluate, and Train (RESET) Initiative prepares candidates to address mental health issues in high-need urban, rural, and suburban school districts.
Acceptance to RESET is limited, highly selective, and requires a commitment to address mental health issues impacting K-12 students. Students must complete an internship in one of the three school districts named RESET Initiative partners for the 2024-25 academic year.

RESET Benefits
Students in the MS in Counseling – School Counseling Concentration who are selected for the RESET initiative will be eligible for the following benefits:
Tuition Support
A 50% reduction in course tuition for the MS in Counseling program. This financial support aims to alleviate the burden of education expenses, allowing students to focus on their studies and professional development.
Laptop Computer
A JHU-issued laptop computer will be provided to students accepted into RESET to support academic and internship experience. This technology will enable students to access resources, research, and complete coursework efficiently.
ASCA Membership
The initiative supports the payment of annual membership fees for the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) while enrolled in the program.
Field Experience (Internship) Stipend
While completing internship requirements, RESET Initiative JHU School Counseling Concentration students will receive a $10,000.00 stipend to help defray the cost of living expenses during the internship experience and $1,500.00 in relocation assistance.

Eligibility and Requirements
To be eligible to participate in RESET, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Receive and accept an offer of admission to the Johns Hopkins Master of Science in Counseling – School Counseling program.
- Be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident.
- Agree to participate in an accelerated program, attending full-time, which is enrolling in at least nine (9) credits per semester or as directed by the JHU RESET faculty advisor.
- Possess a strong passion and commitment to school counseling and a dedication to promoting the well-being of students.
- Demonstrate exceptional academic achievements and a commitment to personal growth.
- Exhibit strong leadership skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse individuals and communities.
- Hold a genuine desire to contribute positively to school counseling and make a difference in students’ lives.

“We’re interested in equipping current and future counselors with the tools to dismantle the mental health issues that students face—the trauma of the pandemic, drug crises, and the many “isms”—all of which may be impeding their academic success.”
Anita Young’s research focuses on using data and accountability strategies to close achievement and opportunity gaps for K-12 students as well as building leadership capacity for school counselors. Young has co-authored two books, published research in scholarly journals, and served on editorial boards.
