MEHP Grads Win Big at IEE Conference
Peer nominated, reviewed and selected, the School of Medicine’s Institute for Excellence in Education (IEE) Education Awards recognize outstanding Johns Hopkins medical educators and acknowledge significant achievement in clinical education. This year, MEHP candidates and alumni figured prominently in the list of honorees at the May 24 IEE Conference.
Rachel Salas, MD, MEHP ’18, also honored at this year’s Society of Excellence Awards, won the award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching—Less Than Ten Years on Faculty. Salas, who received her MEHP degree during the School of Education’s May graduation ceremonies, is an associate professor of neurology and nursing, and director of interprofessional education and collaborative practice at the School of Medicine.
For their innovative work in developing the curriculum “Advancing Bedside Cardiopulmonary Physical Examination Skills,” Brian T. Garibaldi, MD, MEHP ’18, and Timothy Niessen, MD, received the award for Outstanding Achievement in Education Programs. Garibaldi, who also received his MEHP degree this May, is an assistant professor of medicine at the School of Medicine and associate program director for clinical skills and curriculum in the Osler Medical Residency Program.
In the Education Shark Tank Award category, three to five finalists present proposals to a panel of “education sharks,” who can award up to $10,000 to one or more of these projects. This year, Associate Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation R. Samuel Mayer, MD, MEHP ’16, was the sole winner of the entire amount for his proposal “Software to Enhance Precision Bedside Learning.”
Huq Lands ERASMUS Teaching Fellowship
Fawzia Huq, MEHP ’17, senior lecturer in medical education and sub-dean, international, at the University of Sydney’s Concord Clinical School, has been awarded an ERASMUS teaching fellowship, a prestigious European Union-funded mobility award to allow sharing of teaching innovations between institutions around the world. Through the fellowship, she will share the Residents-as-Teachers program developed last year with colleagues at the University of Copenhagen.
Merritt Named Assistant Dean of Medicine at Brown
Current MEHP Fellow Rory Merritt, MD, was promoted to Assistant Dean of Medicine, Program in Liberal Medical Education, at Brown University’s Warren Alpert Medical School, where he will have a role in advising students in the university’s combined BA/MD program (an eight-year continuum). Merritt is also currently a Medical Education Research Fellow through the university’s Emergency Medicine Foundation.
Sozio Promoted to Associate Professor
MEHP faculty member Stephen Sozio, MD, MEHP ’17, was promoted to associate professor in medicine-nephrology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine on April 25. Last year, he was one of 17 faculty members honored by the Johns Hopkins Alumni Association with the Excellence in Teaching Award.
