On Thursday, March 22, Baltimore’s Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle School will overflow with the arts, as students and teachers demonstrate the extraordinary ways they have woven the performing and visual arts into every classroom.

In addition to celebrating the broad appeal and impact of the arts on student learning and school culture, the event also marks the next phase of the public school’s innovative, arts-integrated teaching and learning partnership with the Johns Hopkins School of Education.

Launched in 2016 with a grant from the Joseph & Harvey Meyerhoff Family Charitable Funds, the partnership was expanded last year with support from Homewood Community Partners Initiative (HCPI), a community-development strategy comprising 10 neighborhoods around the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus.

With the goal of creating a “flagship” arts-focused program at the city public school, the partnership provides coaching in arts integration and supports both classroom and afterschool programming in the visual and performing arts, including Single Carrot Theater and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids program.

The evening will include a “Visual Arts and Arts Integration Showcase,” student performances, interactive activities and guest speakers, including School of Education Vice Dean of Academic Affairs Mariale Hardiman. Light refreshments will be served.
