Mario Jovan Shaw and Jason Terrell, both 2012 Teach For America graduates from Charlotte, were recently recognized in the Social Entrepreneurs category of Forbes Magazine’s 30 Under 30 2017 issue. They met as roommates in 2012 while doing Teach For America and came up with the idea to cultivate mentorship opportunities for black men from “cradle to career.”
Profound Gentlemen, which they co-founded, works to provide career support for teachers while also developing mentorship opportunities for their students—young boys of color. The organization has helped 150 male educators of color and almost 3,000 boys of color with their respective journeys in education.
Shaw and Terrell are among 10 Teach For America alumni who have been recognized in the Education and Social Entrepreneurs categories of the 30 Under 30 honoree list. Having gained experience teaching in high-need classrooms and communities across the United States, these 10 alumni form part of a larger Teach For America network of more than 11,000 innovators and entrepreneurs, many of whom have also been recognized by Forbes in previous editions.
