From Evidence to Impact

When education faces its most complex challenges, we need solutions that work in the real world. That’s why our faculty don’t work in isolation — they collaborate with students, policymakers, and communities to develop evidence-based education research that transforms practice and policy at every level.

What sets the Johns Hopkins School of Education apart is this commitment to going from research to practice to policy in an integrative way.

Robert Balfanz Director of the Everyone Graduates Center

For example, our Center for Safe and Healthy Schools partners directly with school districts around the country to implement research-based solutions that create more nurturing learning environments.

In the same vein, our Homeschool Hub is directly influencing policy discussions across the nation and in Washington, DC by bringing to light data and insights into the surprising diversity of America’s growing homeschooling communities.

Solutions That Scale

Our research doesn’t stop at publication — it becomes the tools, resources, and frameworks that educators, policymakers, and communities use every day. From tutoring programs backed by rigorous evidence to comprehensive systems that support early learners, our work translates directly into measurable improvements for students, families, and schools.

Improving Student Outcomes and Empowering Families

We develop resources that strengthen the connections between schools, families, and communities — because student success depends on support systems that work together.

Informing Effective U.S. Education Policy

Our research directly shapes state and national education policy, providing policymakers with the evidence they need to make informed decisions.

Helping Teachers and School Systems Excel

We create evidence-based tools and partnership models that help educators and school systems improve practice and drive better outcomes.

Academic Solutions That Bridge Theory and Application

Our graduate programs immerse students in the vital work of developing solutions while preparing them for meaningful careers in education. From our PhD students conducting groundbreaking research alongside faculty mentors, to our master’s students gaining hands-on experience in Baltimore schools, every program connects rigorous academic training with collaborative practice and real-world impact.

The Johns Hopkins School of Education is really great at providing quality education as well as being research-forward.

Breaking Down Academic Silos

The complexity of today’s educational challenges calls for collaboration across multiple disciplines. That’s why we’ve built lasting partnerships across Johns Hopkins University — bringing together experts in medicine, public health, business, engineering, and more to work alongside our education faculty.

Our school of education gives people the opportunity to pursue their passion as it relates to education — to collaborate in an interdisciplinary fashion with our peers across the university.

Annette Anderson Deputy Director of the Center for Safe and Healthy Schools

Cross-University Collaboration in Action

The Johns Hopkins School of Education partners across divisions, disciplines, and institutions to tackle complex challenges in education. By bringing together researchers, practitioners, and community partners, we turn shared expertise into scalable solutions that expand opportunity and improve outcomes for learners nationwide.

When student mental health was recognized as a critical issue in our schools, we partnered with the School of Medicine and the Bloomberg School of Public Health to develop comprehensive approaches that address both educational and clinical needs. Today, our counseling programs train the next generation of school counselors with cutting-edge knowledge from multiple disciplines.

As the field of health care evolves from treating disease to keeping people healthy, the School of Education has led the way in clinical education. Partnering with Johns Hopkins’ schools of Medicine, Business, Nursing, and Public Health, our MEHP program prepares the next generation of leaders in health professions education with the most effective patient care practices.

The Data Science Revolution

Johns Hopkins’ investments in data science and artificial intelligence aren’t just revolutionizing medicine and engineering — they’re changing how we understand and improve education. Our faculty employ these resources alongside community partners to uncover patterns in student learning, predict intervention needs, and develop personalized approaches that were almost impossible just years ago.

The future of education will depend on educational technology leadership. We train leaders who can critically assess emerging tools, navigate social impacts, and design inclusive, human-centered solutions that work.

James Diamond Director of the Master of Education in Learning Design and Technology Program

Student Experiences That Span Disciplines

Our students have access to learning opportunities that exist nowhere else. Medical education transformation initiatives. Public health approaches to educational equity. Engineering solutions for assistive technology. These interdivisional, integrative experiences prepare them to think beyond traditional boundaries throughout their careers.

What really makes us unique is our absolute focus on interprofessional collaboration, education, research, and change agency.

Toni Ungaretti Director for the Master of Education in the Health Professions Program

Developing Leaders Who Amplify Impact

Every Johns Hopkins School of Education graduate joins a network of changemakers working to transform education on a global scale. They become superintendents who reimagine entire districts, policymakers who craft evidence-based legislation, researchers who influence global education practice, and teachers who change lives one student at a time. From state education departments to international development organizations, our alumni are leading change at every level of the education ecosystem.

Academic Programs Designed for Systemic Change

Whether preparing counselors to address student mental health, training teachers through our innovative TeachingWell residency program, or developing education policy experts, our master’s programs empower leaders for immediate impact as they build careers of lasting influence. Similarly, our PhD and EdD graduates become the faculty, researchers, and thought leaders who shape the future of education. With rigorous training in both methods and application, they’re equipped to tackle the field’s most pressing challenges.

Faculty Mentorship That Shapes Future Leaders

Our faculty’s commitment to our students extends far beyond graduation. They often serve as career-long mentors, connecting students to opportunities, collaborating on research, and providing the guidance that develops promising individuals into transformational leaders.

The ability to take different courses that all are geared towards how can we enact change in order to improve the educational outcomes of our students, especially in an urban setting, was really interesting to me, and also motivated me to dig more deeply into it and see how I can enact change within that system.

Student Experiences in Real-World Settings

Through partnerships with Baltimore City Public Schools, internships with policy organizations, and research collaborations with faculty, our students graduate with a clear understanding that we achieve more when we work together.

Case in point: our TeachingWell master’s program. Designed to elevate STEM achievement in Maryland, the program offers full-tuition support and integrates evidence-based training with practical classroom experience right here in local partner schools.

Locally Rooted, Globally Trusted

In Baltimore, we’re not just a neighbor — we’re a true community partner. Our deep engagement with local schools, families, and organizations gives our research authentic credibility and provides real-world testing ground for solutions that we can share with communities everywhere.

Henderson-Hopkins: A Model for Urban Education

Henderson-Hopkins, the partnership elementary/middle school we help operate in Easter Baltimore, demonstrates what’s possible when university expertise combines with community wisdom. Together, we’ve created a school that consistently ranks among Baltimore’s top-performing schools while serving as a vital neighborhood anchor.

Local Impact Beyond East Baltimore

As the largest producer of new teachers for Baltimore City Public Schools, we’re working to address urban education’s most critical needs. Yet our Baltimore partnerships extend far beyond individual schools. We also work with community organizations, health providers, and city agencies to address the full spectrum of factors that influence student success. These collaborations ground our research in lived experience and generate solutions that actually scale.

The great thing about Hopkins is that it’s in Baltimore and that here we have an opportunity to be in community with residents who share our interest in social change.

Odis Johnson, Jr. Executive Director of the Center for Safe and Healthy Schools

From the City to the World

The insights we gain through our Baltimore partnerships inform our work with communities worldwide. Our research on urban education challenges, community health approaches, and equity strategies shapes policy discussions and practice development across the globe.

Our students gain experience across this full spectrum — from teaching and counseling in Baltimore schools to international research collaborations, and from community engagement projects to global policy internships. This breadth of opportunity ensures that they graduate prepared to create positive impact wherever their careers lead them.

Where Bold Vision Meets Collaborative Action

Education’s greatest challenges demand both fearless thinking and the courage to bridge divides — between disciplines, between research and practice, between what is and what must be. At the Johns Hopkins School of Education, we bring together the intellectual rigor of a world-class research university, the practical wisdom gained through deep community partnerships, and the passionate commitment of faculty and students who refuse to accept the status quo.

A New Home for Transformative Ideas

Our newly renovated Education Building welcomes visitors to the Homewood Campus with spaces intentionally designed for collaboration and innovation. This transformation reflects our ongoing investment in creating environments where students, faculty, and communities come together to build the future of education.
