Samantha Viano, PhD, is an associate professor and Doctor of Education program director at the Johns Hopkins School of Education. A nationally recognized scholar of education policy and leadership, Sam examines some of the most persistent challenges facing K–12 schools, through research spanning school climate and safety, high school graduation, online credit recovery, teacher mobility, school improvement, and leadership preparation. Across this work, she focuses especially on how educational policies and institutional practices shape the experiences and outcomes of traditionally marginalized and racially minoritized students and their teachers.
Her work has earned significant national recognition, including the National Science Foundation’s CAREER Award, as well as both dissertation and postdoctoral fellowships from the National Academy of Education and the Spencer Foundation. She has also led and contributed to major studies supported by the Institute of Education Sciences and the National Institute of Justice.
