The Routines-Based Interview (RBI) is a research-based intervention developed by Robin McWilliams that helps assess the needs of children with disabilities, their families, and their service providers.
Interviews that last no longer than two hours and are often conducted in the family’s home gather information about the day-to-day activities of the child and their family, build strong relationships between family members and caregivers, and create functional and meaningful outcomes for the child and their family.
The RBI supports the family as the primary person in the child’s life and meets the family where they are in order to expand on their skills and confidence, which allows their child to grow and learn.
Through the Dynamic Impact process, the Johns Hopkins Center for Technology in Education provides:
-
Training and coaching for individual RBI providers.
-
Training and coaching for RBI interviewers to assume the role of the coach and to build support in local systems for scaling up and sustaining the RBI practice.
-
Support for state and local RBI coaches to advocate for their role in their jurisdictions.
-
Assistance to local leaders and RBI coaches to develop a plan to assure ongoing fidelity to the practice as well as address systems change so that RBI can be fully implemented.
