We are America’s first research university, founded on the principle that by pursuing big ideas and sharing what we learn, we can make the world a better place. Since our founding 1909 as the Johns Hopkins’ College Courses for Teachers, our faculty have been working to improve education with big, bold ideas.

More than 50 years ago, Professor James Coleman shook up the education establishment with the proposition that a child’s performance in school could not be separated from the ill effects of income inequality and discrimination. Today, our researchers push conventional thought with that same zeal. Our faculty bring the best expertise, dig into the evidence, and uncover surprising new possibilities of promise.
