{"id":40,"date":"2023-05-23T19:38:16","date_gmt":"2023-05-23T19:38:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jhu-soe.dev.fastspot.com\/edpolicy\/social-studies-knowledge-map\/"},"modified":"2024-03-06T20:41:42","modified_gmt":"2024-03-06T20:41:42","slug":"social-studies-knowledge-map","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/education.jhu.edu\/edpolicy\/k-12-education-solutions\/social-studies-knowledge-map\/","title":{"rendered":"Social Studies Knowledge Map\u2122"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span>This mapping enables practitioners, school and district leaders, and policymakers to ascertain the extent to which knowledge is accessible through the curriculum and over what grade span.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We also assess whether a given unit includes more than one perspective, and whether the teacher-facing materials encourage deliberation and disagreement.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Throughout the review process, IEP works closely with instructional leaders to ensure that the map reflects the school or system\u2019s vision of a well-educated student\u00a0 and includes specific knowledge domains that matter to the local community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Social Studies \u201cKnowledge Gap\u201d <\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span>The achievement gap is, in large part, a knowledge gap. Research from around the world shows that a comprehensive, content-rich curriculum is a signature feature of high-performing systems. Despite the research record, a majority of the United States\u2019 curricula treat social studies content not as a source of building and applying knowledge, but merely as a site for trying (fruitlessly) to hone abstract skills.
