High-quality early childhood care is crucial for laying a strong foundation for cognitive, social, and emotional development, all of which support lifelong learning and success.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"489\" data-end=\"551\"><strong>Maryland EXCELS promotes quality by awarding ratings to:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"552\" data-end=\"681\">\n<li data-start=\"552\" data-end=\"578\">\n<p data-start=\"554\" data-end=\"578\">Child Care Centers<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"579\" data-end=\"617\">\n<p data-start=\"581\" data-end=\"617\">School-Age Child Care Programs<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"618\" data-end=\"649\">\n<p data-start=\"620\" data-end=\"649\">Family Child Care Homes<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"650\" data-end=\"681\">\n<p data-start=\"652\" data-end=\"681\">Public Prekindergartens<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"683\" data-end=\"815\">These ratings are made available to families, helping them make informed choices about the care and education of their children.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"993\"><strong data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"893\">Maryland EXCELS <\/strong>participants earn quality ratings on a scale from 1 to 5, forming a pathway to excellence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"817\" data-end=\"993\"><strong>The standards cover a wide range of categories including:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1216\">\n<li data-start=\"994\" data-end=\"1026\">\n<p data-start=\"996\" data-end=\"1026\">Licensing and Compliance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1027\" data-end=\"1072\">\n<p data-start=\"1029\" data-end=\"1072\">Staffing and Professional Development<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1112\">\n<p data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1112\">Accreditation and Rating Scales<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1113\" data-end=\"1170\">\n<p data-start=\"1115\" data-end=\"1170\">Developmentally Appropriate Learning and Practice<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1171\" data-end=\"1216\">\n<p data-start=\"1173\" data-end=\"1216\">Administration Policies and Practices<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1218\" data-end=\"1452\">A rating of 1 is awarded to providers and programs that successfully meet initial requirements. A rating of 5 is granted to those demonstrating the highest level of quality and who are state or nationally accredited.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1454\" data-end=\"1728\">All programs participating in Maryland EXCELS \u2014 at every level \u2014 demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement.
