The Mathematics Instructional Leader (Pre-K–6) certificate prepares mathematics teacher leaders to support pre-K to sixth-grade teachers and their students. Students are specially trained to lead educational contexts to develop powerful learning environments and to support the development of beginning and veteran elementary school teachers of mathematics.

Prerequisite(s): Earned bachelor's degree in education in mathematics or science, with professional teaching experience in elementary, middle, or secondary schools.

The applicant is expected to be a classroom teacher with at least 18 months of teaching experience, and to be currently employed by a school district or an accredited independent school.

Maryland state-certified teachers interested in earning the Instructional Leader: STEM, Pre-K-6 endorsement should consult the Maryland State Department of Education website for requirements.

Essay: A 500-word essay discussing the reasons you wish to pursue the Instructional Leader certificate in Mathematics or STEM and focusing on your long-term goals upon completion of this academic program. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses in your academic background, as well as any additional information that will assist in evaluating your application materials. Essays should be typed on a separate sheet of paper.
Two letters of recommendation, preferably one from a supervisor within your teaching context and one from an academic reference.

Program Description

Students in the pre-K to sixth-grade levels are learning critical knowledge and skills necessary for mathematics and STEM-related college majors and careers. The Mathematics Instructional Leader (Pre-K–6) certificate program is an online, 18-hour certificate for current teachers who want to enhance their professional qualifications to develop motivating learning experiences for mathematics students and to inspire change within their school or district as a leader, coach, or mentor.

Through this program, graduate students become catalysts of highly engaging mathematics learning environments. Graduate students are immersed in active learning experiences to bolster their content knowledge in foundational mathematics, including a focus on early algebraic and geometric thinking.

Candidates for the Mathematics Instructional Leader certificate learn to incorporate research-based practices that support equity, access, and excellence for young mathematics learners, including underrepresented individuals, students with learning differences, and English learners. These practices include culturally relevant pedagogy such as asset-based instructional practices; problem-based and project-based learning; technology-enhanced instruction; mathematics explorations, inquiry-oriented strategies, problem solving, and critical thinking; computational thinking; and interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches.

Candidates can combine this certificate with other areas (see related programs) as they pursue a master’s degree. Under the MS in Education with a concentration in Educational Studies, students can pursue two pathways in the Individualized Interdisciplinary Program of Study to obtain a master’s degree. The first pathway allows a student to combine deep study of one area of education with exposure to the breadth of educational theory and practice. The second pathway enables students to combine two graduate certificate programs with the Seminar in Teacher Leadership that completes the Educational Studies concentration.

A Mathematics Instructional Leader candidate, for example, may combine this certificate with the Mind, Brain, and Teaching certificate to understand how teachers create learning environments based on the learning sciences as they deepen knowledge of pedagogical approaches within mathematics education. Alternatively, a student may pursue the Gifted Education or Urban Education certificate (face-to-face only) to become a Mathematics–Gifted or Mathematics–Urban Education Instructional Leader. Combining programs prepares candidates for long-term success and Mathematics leadership within their schools and districts.

PROGRAM PLAN

This program is designed for current teachers seeking to enhance their professional qualifications through graduate study. Individuals who hold teaching certification in the state of Maryland and complete this certificate program will be eligible for Maryland teaching endorsement as a Mathematics Instructional Leader in grade levels pre-K to 6.
Individuals not residing in Maryland or not certified to teach in Maryland are not eligible for the endorsement, and will enroll in one of two leadership recommended courses in place of the internship course.
This program does not lead to initial teacher certification but can lead to a master’s degree when combined with another certificate program. Program requirements

This 18-credit, fully online certificate program is approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) for those seeking the Mathematics Instructional Leader (Pre-K–6) endorsement. Prerequisites to being admitted to the program are completion of a bachelor’s degree in education or a closely related field from a regionally or nationally accredited institution and mathematics or science teaching experience in elementary, middle, or secondary schools.

  • Develop age-appropriate, student-centered learning experiences that engage students in interwoven and interdisciplinary classroom activities (NSTA, 2003) and/or promote the principles of equity, curriculum, teaching, learning, assessment, and technology (NCTM 2000).
  • Create technology-enhanced and/or problem-based learning experiences in STEM or mathematics content.

Courses are delivered fully online in an asynchronous format that features small interactive groups, whole-class participation, engagement with young learners in educational settings, and individual preparation.
