Master of Science in Education – Educational Studies (Urban Teachers)

Aspiring teachers in the Urban Teachers program earn a master’s degree from the School of Education while learning to teach and refining their practice with support from experienced educators. Urban Teachers is a clinically based residency and coaching model that guides students into full-time teaching positions at traditional and charter public schools in Baltimore, Dallas, and Washington, D.C.  In order to be admitted to the two-year master’s program, students must be accepted into the four-year Urban Teachers program.

I would learn something in class on Tuesday and be able to implement it on Wednesday. You can tell that Urban Teachers and Johns Hopkins sat down and really thought out the curriculum. It matches the flow of the school year.

Master of Science in Education – Educational Studies (Urban Teachers)

Program Description

Students in the four-year Urban Teachers program earn a master’s degree and dual certification in special education and elementary education, secondary English, or secondary math. Those who study in Dallas are also certified in ESL.

Urban Teachers seeks to transform schools through accountability and improvement among educators. In the program’s cohort model, students study with fellow educators who want to inspire change in underserved schools. The clinically based curriculum integrates planning, rehearsal, enacting, and reflection on teaching experiences.

In Year One, students select a school in Baltimore, Dallas, or Washington, D.C., and work beside a host teacher while receiving expert coaching from JHU clinical faculty. Graduate coursework occurs after school hours. In Year Two, coaching continues as students move into salaried teaching positions and complete their degrees. Coaching continues in Year Three and is available in Year Four, if needed. Urban Teachers is ideal for those without an educational background who want a career in the classroom.
