The Johns Hopkins University School of Education (SOE) seeks a Director for the Center for Safe and Healthy Schools. We seek a productive scholar with a demonstrated ability to build and lead interdisciplinary teams of researchers and practitioners in support of the Initiative’s mission. The Director, with the support of CSHS staff and faculty, will have a unique opportunity to construct a vision and program for the Center.
The Center for Safe and Healthy Schools (CSHS), a research, teaching, and outreach effort led and administered by the School of Education, will harness the interdisciplinary strength of the Johns Hopkins University academic community, including researchers and scholars from the School of Education, Applied Physics Lab, Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Krieger School of Arts and Sciences. Its mission will be to conduct applied research to build the evidence base of best practices and utilize a translational approach to ensure that these Safe and Healthy School practices are adopted in schools and communities.

We seek a productive scholar with a demonstrated ability to build and lead interdisciplinary teams of researchers and practitioners in support of the Initiative’s mission. The Director, with the support of CSHS staff and faculty, will have a unique opportunity to construct a vision and program for the Center. This individual will lead a research, teaching, and outreach enterprise at a time in our nation’s history where there is extraordinary attention focused on the safety of our nation’s schools even as no holistic evidence-based approach exists. The ideal candidate will lead the CSHS efforts to shape the national conversation around Safe and Healthy Schools, and conduct and translate research and academic programming to provide policymakers, school leaders, and other stakeholders with the tools and knowledge needed to improve the safety, health, and effectiveness of students’ learning environments.
Building the evidence base through applied research and translating that research into relevant practice and policy will be the CSHS most critical activity. Toward that end, the Center will pursue sponsored funding opportunities and build and sustain partnerships with government and non-government entities to distribute tools and practices to community and school leaders as well as teachers and other communities. To ensure that its work remains relevant and effective, CSHS faculty and staff will work extensively with practitioners to assess future research needs.
The CSHS will leverage the comprehensive strengths of Johns Hopkins University and build upon its history of bold experimentation and innovation. The Center’s Director will play a central role in the CSHS’s integration and synthesis of applied research relevant to safe and healthy schools in three areas: Health and Wellness, School and Community Engagement, and Security and Technology. The CSHS will also offer innovative credit and non-credit academic programs designed to provide school leaders and policymakers who require training in techniques and best practices linked to safe and healthy schools and school safety. The CSHS’s outreach goal will require the Director to communicate with and engage various communities – including state and federal policymakers – in the mission and goals of the Initiative.
The Director will report to the Dean of the School of Education and serve as a senior member of the School’s faculty.
The Director will be a productive senior scholar with expertise in one or more relevant areas of research including school climate, adolescent mental health, trauma-informed teaching, school climate and leadership, juvenile justice, equitable outcomes associated with safe and healthy schools, and school security. S/he will bring vision and a demonstrated record of innovation.
- Doctoral degree in education or relevant field.
- Demonstrated ability to lead interdisciplinary research teams.
- Demonstrated ability to work across university divisions in conducting research.
- Sustained research record commensurate with appointment to a senior faculty position in the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders, including scholars, policymakers and practitioners
- Demonstrated ability to secure sponsored funding.
- Experience managing multiple tasks and budgeting time and resources appropriately.
- Broad knowledge of P-12 education, including experience as a practitioner
- University research center leadership.
- Experience leading academic organizations or units, including budget management.
- Experience developing strategic plans or business plans in educational organizations.
- Experience recruiting, evaluating and supervising academic staff.
- Experience developing practitioner tools.
