Becoming a Certified Teacher in Maryland
The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) has approved all JHU teacher preparation programs. The National Council of Accreditation Teacher Education (NCATE) has also accredited JHU's School of Education. Candidates who have been accepted to JHU must meet the following requirements for certification and graduation: content course work, education course work, supervised teaching, an electronic portfolio, and passing scores on the appropriate exams.
CONTENT COURSEWORK
All content coursework must be reviewed and evaluated by a JHU adviser and completed with grades of B or better before beginning the first of two teacher of record years.
- Secondary - a content major or 36 credits representing the scope of the subject area:
- Mathematics - should include college mathematics, calculus, and differential equations
- Foreign Language (Spanish) - should include structure of the language, culture, oral and written communication, and literature
- Science - at least 36 credits in one of the areas listed below and course work in mathematics and in each of the other sciences: Chemistry or Physics
- Early Childhood, Elementary Spanish Immersion, and Elementary Advanced Math - at least nine (9) credits of coursework in Social Studies and English; at least 12 credits of coursework in mathematics and science; and coursework in the arts and physical education. Spanish Immersion applicants must provide evidence of fluency. Advanced Math applicants must have 6 additional math course credits.
EDUCATION COURSEWORK AND SUPERVISED TEACHING
Montgomery ProMAT provides education courses and supervised teaching experiences which meet MSDE requirements.
ELECTRONIC PORTFOLIO
The nationally recognized Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (INTASC) Principles and the professional content (SPA) standards guide MAT programs. Using both sets of standards, candidates demonstrate their competence through an electronic portfolio monitored by faculty.
EXAMS
Maryland requires passing scores on specified exams:
- Praxis I, GRE, SAT, or ACT - Submitted with application.
- Praxis II - Exams in content area and pedagogy (teaching). The Praxis II Content Exam (Spanish candidates may take either the Praxis II exams or the ACTFL OPI and WPT exams) must be taken and passed before beginning the first teaching fellow/internship year. The Praxis II Pedagogy Exam (N/A Spanish) must be taken in the fall of the second year to meet the graduation deadline.
