Professional Immersion General Education (ProMAT) Cohort Program
Johns Hopkins University, in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), offers a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree for those interested in becoming Secondary General Education teachers, Early Childhood teachers, Elementary Spanish Immersion teachers, or Elementary Advanced Math teachers.
ProMAT at a glance:
- Two year, 39-credit graduate program in Secondary General Education, Early Childhood, Elementary Spanish Immersion, or in Elementary Advanced Math Education at JHU
- JHU's ProMAT program offers approved programs leading to certification in:
- Secondary Mathematics
- Secondary Foreign Language (Spanish)
- Secondary Science (Chemistry or Physics)
- Early Childhood
- Elementary Spanish Immersion
- Elementary Advanced Math
- Interested in Elementary General Education, Secondary Social Studies, English, Biology, ESOL, or Secondary French Education? These areas of certification preparation are offered through other JHU MAT programs.
- All tuition, books, and fees paid by MCPS after first 6 credits
- Participants become the full-time teachers of record in MCPS classrooms for two years while taking coursework
- Four levels of professional support throughout the teaching fellowship
- University Supervisor (retired MCPS professional)
- School-based Candidate Coach (experienced on-site teaching mentor)
- University Adviser (JHU program coordinator)
- Portfolio Adviser (JHU program coordinators/instructors and exemplary ProMAT graduates)
- Three-year teaching commitment in MCPS upon successful completion of the program
Eligible applicants include people who desire a teaching career and:
- already have an undergraduate degree.
- recently completed or will complete an undergraduate degree by May 2010.
- have not yet completed education coursework or a student teaching experience.
- have US residency and work status for 5 consecutive years.
Admission to the next cohort (Cohort 12) is on a rolling basis until all positions are filled. Please call (301) 294-7102 for your subject area status prior to applying. Coursework begins May 2010.
