The Leadership in Special Education Teacher Preparation program is a full-time, four-year doctoral program emphasizing the use of evidence-based practices, applied policy analysis, and culturally responsive instruction. Co-directed by Dr's. Michael S. Rosenberg (mrose@jhu.edu) and Laurie U. deBettencourt (debetten@jhu.edu), the program, which will begin in August 2011, is funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP).

Specifically designed to develop the next generation of special education teacher educators and researchers, the program provides students with the wide range of knowledge and skills necessary for conceptualizing, implementing, and conducting research. Students will work closely with School of Education researchers and faculty to explore the intersection of scientific research and how it can impact K-12 education and beyond. A cohort of seven scholars will be prepared to:

  • design, implement, and conduct research on a continuum of special education teacher development alternatives;
  • integrate the diverse knowledge base of what it takes to become and remain an exemplary special education teacher; and
  • transition successfully to special education faculty positions in colleges and universities.

Students will apply what they learn through selected internships in established research centers, governmental agencies, and high-needs urban school districts.
