Executive Function Seminar
September 25, 2008
The School of Education kicked off its year-long celebration of 100 years of programs for educators at Johns Hopkins when the Neuro-Education Initiative offered a professional development seminar on Executive Function (a term used to describe the mental processes that help guide and regulate our actions and activities, such as the ability to plan, organize, manage time, strategize, form concepts, and think abstractly).
Leadership Weekend Panel

The School of Education hosted a panel discussion and reception featuring the Center for Technology in Education, the Neuro-Education Initiative, and the National Center for Summer Learning. The event coincided with Leadership Weekend and the fall meeting of the SOE’s National Advisory Board.
Counseling and Human Services Panel
November 20, 2008
Department of Counseling and Human Services Chair Alan Green moderated a discussion on “The Role of Counseling in Strengthening Schools” among faculty Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy, Yolanda Abel ’08, and Veronique Gugliucciello ’04. Maria Kohlerman presented information on the Student and Alumni Counseling Association, and alumna Barbara Chizever and her granddaughter (and current counseling student) Sarah Askin received surprise recognition from Dean Fessler.
Special Education Panel
January 14, 2009
Faculty members from the Department of Special Education—Laurie deBettencourt, Danielle Liso, and Linda Tsantis—examined the challenges of finding and preparing the next generation of special education teachers, placing emphasis on critical-needs areas such as early childhood and autism, the characteristics of the “highly qualified” special educator, implications for school systems, and the importance of parental involvement. The panel was moderated by Professor Michael Rosenberg, and SOE alumna Carol Ann Heath-Baglin ’01, assistant state superintendent, Division of Special Education/Early Intervention Services for the Maryland State Department of Education, served as discussant.
Counseling and Human Services Reunion

Counseling students, alumni, staff, and faculty gathered for the annual reunion of the Counseling and Human Services Department. Gina Richman, PhD, director of the Child & Family Therapy Clinic at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and faculty member of the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and Education, addressed balancing the client’s needs with effective treatment plans while working within the limitations of health insurance.

Department of Teacher Preparation Portfolio Conference

Remarks by Baltimore City Public Schools CEO Andres Alonso and Baltimore City School Board President Brian Morris kicked off the 2009 Portfolio Conference, which showcases each candidate’s work in the MAT program at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education. The first Elaine M. Stotko Distinguished Portfolio Awards were presented to Justin Brent Watkins and Shawn Swanson, both 2008 Teach For America graduates.

Evening with Author Paul Tough

The Department of Teacher Preparation sponsored a talk by author Paul Tough, one of America’s foremost writers on poverty, education, and the achievement gap. Marc Steiner, president of the Center for Emerging Media and host of a talk show on WEAA, led a question-and-answer session following the presentation. Following the presentation, Tough signed copies of his most recent book, Whatever It Takes: Geoffrey Canada's Quest to Change Harlem and America.

Montgomery ProMAT, ProSEMS and SET-IT Alumni Event

The sixth annual alumni event for graduating students and alumni of the Montgomery County Professional Immersion and SET-IT programs was held on May 18 at the MCC. Along with dinner, participants enjoyed games of trivia and SOE-inspired “Jeopardy!” Entertainment was provided by jazz musicians from Albert Einstein High School, one of the SOE’s Professional Development Schools.
