Professional Immersion Special Education (PROSEMS) Cohort Program

The School of Education at Johns Hopkins University, in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools, offers a master's degree program for those interested in becoming special education teachers.

The ProSEMS program begins Summer 2010.

ProSEMS at a glance:

  • Two year, 39-credit immersion graduate program
  • Successful completion of the program leads to:
    • Master of Science in Special Education degree in Teaching Students with Mild to Moderate Disabilities (MMD)
    • Eligibility for Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) certification in Special Education (generic) grades 1-12
  • Field experiences as a paraeducator during the first year of program; hired as full-time long term substitutes (special education teachers) during second year of program
  • Two-year full-time teaching commitment in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) upon successful completion of the program

Benefits:

  • All tuition, books, fees paid after the first year
  • Extensive mentoring and supervision from JHU and MCPS faculty and staff
  • Health care stipend available during second year
  • Contracted to work in MCPS as special educator upon successful completion of the program.

Eligible applicants include people who:

  • Desire a career change and already have an undergraduate degree
  • Recently completed or will complete an undergraduate degree by May 2010
  • Are not already certified special education teachers nor close to full certification
  • Have a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) for all post-high school coursework

Applications are due by January 1, 2010. Coursework begins Summer 2010.
