FAQ

Caps and Gowns:

I reserved a cap and gown or I forgot to order one, what can I do?
A representative of the bookstore will be stationed near the student check in tables on the lower level of the arena.   He or she will come with orders that have not been picked up and will have a few extras in case someone did not order one at all.  The student will need to give their credit card information to pay for one.

What side should the tassel be on?
Since our students’ degrees will be conferred at the school-wide ceremony the next morning, our students should wear the tassel on the left side.

Can I keep the tassel as a souvenir?
Yes.

Where can I drop off my cap & gown?
Your cap and gown in yours to keep.

Ceremony:

How long will the ceremony last?
As long as the procession can begin at 9:00 with students being seated by 9:15, it should last approximately 2 ½ hours and end by 11:30.

Can I sit with my friend who is also graduating?
As long as it is within the same degree and division – yes.  Your friend should walk in front or behind you.

Where are the bathrooms located?
On the lower level there are bathrooms located on either side of the doors that lead onto the arena floor.

Can I leave as soon as my name is called and I cross the stage?
Out of courtesy for the students who are left, we ask that all students remain seated until the end. Diplomas for May graduates will not be available until after the entire ceremony has ended.

Photographs/Flowers:

Will a photographer be taking pictures?
Yes.  The photographer will take 2 pictures; one of the student in line and one shaking hands with the Dean.

How do I order my photos?
GradImages is the official photographer for our Commencement. Proofs will be sent to your home and via email within three to five days after graduation. Pictures can be ordered online, by phone or by mail. Graduation Images can be contacted at 800-261-2576 or via email at www.gradimages.com

Note:  T- Shirt and flower sales will be located on the upper floor of the arena – close to where they entered the building at the top of the ramp.  These shirts have the students’ names on them. They can be purchased as soon as the ceremony is over or a guest of the student can purchase it and hold it for the student

Diplomas:

If I decide to leave after I cross the stage anyway, will I be able to get my diploma?
No – Diplomas will be handed out only after the ceremony has officially ended.

When will I get my diploma then?
Diplomas will be mailed out all through the month of June.

I am getting a Master’s Degree tonight, but I should also be getting a certificate.  Will my certificate be available tonight?
Students receiving a degree and a certificate(s) will have both in their envelopes.

I applied late to graduate – will my diploma be here tonight?
Students whose graduation application was received after April 1 will not have a diploma at the ceremony.

I have moved and would like to give my new address so my diploma can be mailed.  Who should I call?
Spring graduates can log into SIS at https://sis.jhu.edu/sswf/ and update their address. Please have address current by May 26, 2017.  You can also email soe.registration@jhu.edu with your information.  Please specify that you are on the graduation list so that both the graduation database and registration system can be updated.
