School of Education at Johns Hopkins University - Graduate Education Programs:

Stein, Marc

Faculty Bio

Marc L. Stein (Ph.D., Vanderbilt University) is an education researcher whose research interests lie in the quantitative analyses of the social contexts surrounding schools and schooling and the role that these contexts play in the enactment of educational policy, with special emphasis on racial-ethnic and socioeconomic inequalities. Currently he is working on a project investigating the variation in teachers’ instruction between schools of choice (e.g. magnet, private and charter schools) and traditional public schools across the United States and its effect on student achievement, and on how teachers’ instructional variation is influenced by and is a product of the school sector and context in which the teacher is imbedded. Prior to coming to Johns Hopkins University he was a fellow in the Institute of Educational Sciences (IES) funded Experimental Education Research Training (ExpERT) program at Vanderbilt University and worked as a research assistant for the National Center on School Choice (NCSC). As part of his research at the NCSC, Marc has used longitudinal student level achievement and demographic data to look at school choice issues including the instructional conditions of charter public schools, parent involvement in charter public schools, and the effect of choice on student sorting by race and academic achievement.
