Faculty Bio

Elaine joined the faculty of the Baltimore Pro-MAT program at Johns Hopkins University in 2007. She teaches Methods of Teaching Secondary Social Studies, Supervised Seminar and Internship and Teaching Social Justice. Prior to this, Elaine taught secondary social studies in both New York City and Los Angeles for almost 10 years. She worked for two summers at Teach For America as a faculty member, working with more than a dozen corps members teaching throughout Southern California. Elaine worked as a program associate for Facing History and Ourselves, an international professional development organization whose mission is to engage students in an examination of racism and prejudice to promote a more informed citizenry. Upon moving back East, Elaine became the Director of the Teachers’ Institute at Goucher College, in Baltimore, where she managed all program and operational aspects of the graduate level program, including launching the AP Summer Institute in 2002. Her primary interests are social studies education, including social justice and inquiry-driven curricula.

Professional Experience

JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY, INSTRUCTOR/COORDINATOR, BALTIMORE, MD, 2007 – PRESENT

Full-time faculty member in teacher preparation program, a school-university partnership program between JHU and Baltimore public schools, with emphasis on urban education.

Graduate courses taught: Methods of Teaching Secondary Social Studies, Supervised Internship and Seminar I & II, Teaching Social Justice.

Currently advise 50 teachers in their academic program, course work, and teaching and digital portfolio development.

Coordinator for University Supervision program, matching 240 new teachers with master teachers in mentoring position, and supervisor for five first-year teachers placed in low-performing schools.

GOUCHER COLLEGE, DIRECTOR OF TEACHERS' INSTITUTE, BALTIMORE, MD, 2002 – 2006

Managed all program and operational aspects of Teachers' Institute, a program of graduate-level courses for teachers offered onsite and online throughout the school year.

Supervised 60 faculty members within program.

Established collaborative relationships with officials from county, city and independent school systems on new and upcoming professional development needs for teachers.

Directed marketing efforts, including website, brochures and other publications.

DIRECTOR OF ADVANCED PLACEMENT SUMMER INSTITUTE, 2002 – PRESENT

Launched Goucher College’s AP Summer Institute, a residential program of weeklong graduate courses, offering AP training to teachers in 26 different content areas.

Recruited instructors, wrote publicity brochures and attracted national AP teachers to APSI.

FACING HISTORY AND OURSELVES, SENIOR PROGRAM ASSOCIATE, LOS ANGELES, CA 1997 - 2001

Directed and facilitated teacher institutes for secondary school teachers on issues of racism, social justice and violence prevention in Los Angeles, Los Gatos and Santa Barbara.

Presented program outreach at fundraising and community events and partnered with other non-profit organizations, such as the Museum of Tolerance and Japanese-American National Museum.

Mentored teachers in follow-up services, including school site visits to develop curriculum, model teaching and on-line mentoring.

Designed and taught the following workshops: Reading Instruction for English Language Learners, Race and Membership in American History: American Eugenics Movement, and Comparative Genocide.

Designed and taught workshops on social studies methodology during TFA’s first two summers.
