Faculty Bio

Francine Winston Johnson has been a member of the Johns Hopkins School of Education faculty, in the Department of Teacher Preparation, for more than seven years. She coordinates Masters of Arts in Teaching candidates in the Baltimore ProMAT program.Her experiences as a secondary mathematics teacher and as a teacher of undergraduate mathematics, have helped to shape her focus on the professional development of mathematics teachers.Her major emphasis in professional development is on content knowledge and instructional strategies that lead to improved student achievement.

Dr. Johnson is a regular presenter at local and international conferences that focus on the mathematics preparation of K-12 teachers and has served the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) as a Specialized Professional Associations (SPA) reviewer in mathematics.She currently leads initiatives in a Saturday Algebra Academy at Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland, a grant-funded Institute at Hopkins to develop K-8 Mathematics Lead-Teachers, and actively contributes to the many STEM initiatives that are a major focus of the School of Education and its partners throughout the university.Her most recent contributions to the literature include co-authoring Maximizing the Professional Development School:Two Collaborative Models in the Journal of the National Association for Professional Development Schools and a chapter about data-based decision making applications in mathematics for a text in print.
