Faculty Bio

Dr. Yolanda Abel is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teacher Preparation (DTP) in the School of Education (SOE) at the Johns Hopkins University (JHU). She serves as lead coordinator for the courses Human Development, Learning, and Diversity I and II (HDLD).In addition, to her teaching and advising duties, Dr. Abel is also currently facilitating the reinstatement of early childhood education certification and working as a coordinator of a Professional Development School (PDS). Her dissertation, “African-American Father Involvement in Their Children’s School-Based Lives,” earned the 2008 Judith Ruchkin Research Award from the Maryland Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (MD ASCD). She has been selected to be a member of the 2009-2010 Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) Emerging Leaders Class and is looking forward to continuing to develop and refine her leadership skills and chart her professional development in the field of education.

2008-Present, Assistant Professor, Johns Hopkins University (JHU): Baltimore

Coordinate a professional development school (PDS) with an early childhood focus. Coordinate the early childhood certification program. Teach courses in the Departments of Teacher Prep and Interdisciplinary Studies. Facilitate the relationship between the Phi Delta Kappa (PDK) Hopkins chapter and the School of Education.

Principal Investigator for the Family Employment and Support Program (FESP) Men’s Group Project; UHI Grant Proposal 2008-2009 submitted by Janet Glover-Kerkvliet (clinical community counseling student).

Professional Development Schools (PDS) Coordinator for our early childhood site at George Washington Elementary School in Baltimore City; co-wrote a grant to bring the 100 Book Challenge to the school. Grant notification will occur this April.

The Central Baltimore Higher Education Collaborative; a partnership between a variety of local neighborhood groups and associations and four intuitions of higher education, including Hopkins to stabilize and grow the area referred to as Central Baltimore.

Member of the Civitas Advisory Board; a transformation high school in Baltimore City; a partnership school with the Department of Teacher Preparation
