School of Education at Johns Hopkins University - Graduate Education Programs:

Teacher Development and Leadership

Program Description

Two doctoral program options are offered in the Department of Teacher Development and Leadership: (1) a traditional part-time post-master's program leading to a Doctor of Education (EdD); and (2) a full-time Institute for Education Sciences(IES) post-bachelor's/master's program also leading to an EdD.

Traditional Part-time EdD Program

This program leads to the EdD with a concentration in Teacher Development and Leadership designed to prepare educational leaders for a wide variety of professional positions in PreK-16 administration and supervision, data-based decision-making, research, higher education, and state and national policy making. The goal is to prepare professionals who possess the knowledge and skills needed to provide leadership and produce meaningful change in educational organizations. Students enroll in evening courses part-time while working full time.

Full-time IES Training Program

The IES Interdisciplinary Training Program brings together the Department of Teacher Development and Leadership (School of Education), the Center for Social Organization of Schools (Krieger School of Arts and Sciences), the Department of Sociology (Krieger School of Arts and Sciences), and the Department of Mental Health (Bloomberg School of Public Health) to prepare trainees to conduct cutting edge research focused on improving outcomes for students in grades K-12. This integrated, multidisciplinary training experience complements requirements for the TDL traditional part-time doctoral program. Students enroll in courses full time while also carrying out research internships in one or more of the cooperating departments.

Application Guidelines

Students applying for either program option are expected to possess substantial knowledge and experience in PreK-16 education upon application. The program of study is intended to expand the students' ability to understand, analyze, interpret, and use data to attain organizational goals in educational contexts. Students will generate and disseminate new information and knowledge as they participate in and successfully complete their studies.

Admission Requirements

Admission to either doctoral program option in Teacher Development and Leadership is limited to a small number of highly qualified individuals selected as a cohort. In general, a new cohort begins every two to three years. The next cohort is scheduled for the 2012-2013 academic year.
