The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) School of Education (SOE) is pleased to announce that on October 5 and 6 of 2016, many of the nation’s leading educational researchers will gather to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of the Equality of Educational Opportunity Report (EEOR)- more widely known as the Coleman Report after lead author James Coleman. Considered by many the most significant sociological study ever conducted in the United States, the report challenged conventional thinking at the time with its finding that what happens in the family matters as much to a child’s academic success as what goes on in the classroom. The study helped reframe the national debate over how to achieve equal educational opportunity.
Led by SOE professors Karl Alexander and Stephen Morgan, participating scholars will deliver presentations addressing the questions: How well have its insights held up over the years? ; and what is its continuing relevance to today’s educational and social policy debates? Following the presentations, David Steiner, Executive Director of the School of Education’s Institute for Education Policy is inviting key policymakers to discuss current implications of the Coleman report. Papers presented at the conference will be included in a special online edition issue of the RSF: The Russell Sage Journal of the Social Sciences dedicated to the Coleman Report.
