Provisional Admission

What is Provisional Admission?

You may be admitted on a provisional basis pending fulfillment of clearly defined conditions that are stated to you in writing. Such conditions may include:

  • Successful completion of specific courses that relate to the academic area that you wish to pursue
  • Attainment of specified minimum scores on standardized tests
  • Writing samples
  • Letters of recommendation
  • And/or a review of your resume

What is Required Under Provisional Admission?

  • If you are a graduate student admitted on a provisional basis, you may be required to complete up to nine credits to fulfill conditions for full admission.
  • Credits earned under a provisional admission plan may be applied to a certificate or degree program only if permitted by the academic policy of the program to which you seek admission.
  • To successfully complete a provisional admission plan, you must complete the required courses with a grade of B or better. (A grade of B- is not acceptable.)

Please note that graduate students must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) to maintain eligibility for financial aid and to receive approval for graduation.

What are the Next Steps After Fulfilling Provisional Requirements?

  1. Upon successfully completing the conditions for admission, notify your academic adviser.
  2. After verification, you will be informed in writing that you are fully admitted to the program to which you have applied.
  3. If you do not fulfill the conditions specified, you will not be admitted to School of Education degree or certificate programs and are so informed in writing.
